REBIRTH

The room feels stuffy and crowed. Most don’t mind, but a few of the men become restless from waiting.

“This has taken too long. I’m pulling her out!” Nikko commands, reaching for his mate.

“No!” Anila blocks him.

The entire group stuck inside Grandma Sapphria’s and Grandpa Jack’s house have been working to wake Hope through the night. Most are tired and a few took turns resting on the couches.

“Look at—“

Nova’s eyes spring open as she takes in a deep, sharp breath, jolting to a sitting position. It takes her a second to realize where she is and glances over at Hope’s body. “Hope?”

The ground rumbles and the scene beyond the ice bubble that surrounds the Frost house gets darker. Josiah clings to Hope’s hand as Nicky peers out a window from the Frost living room.

“There’s…there’s more snow covering us,” the teenager informs. “I can’t see anything.”

“Elle!” Hope shouts as her eyes pop open. Her jaw slackens when she sees the number of people surrounding her. “Where’s…where’s Elle? I saw her…I….”

“I did too,” Nova agrees.

“What do you mean, sugar?” Grandma Sapphria asks.

Two women from Frore offer Hope and Nova water who happily take it.

Josiah tries to feed Hope the water, but she pushes him away. “Get away from me.”

“Hope, sugar,” Grandma Sapphria says. “Josiah’s been—“

“Where is Elle?”

“She’s on her way to find her father,” Nova says.

“She left without me?” Hope’s face falls.

“You’ve been unconscious for weeks,” Grandpa Jack shares. “Since…since….”

Hope chokes on her sip of water. Josiah tries to wipe it off her chin, but she swats him away. “Do not treat me like a child!”

“I’m just—“

“I don’t want to hear it,” Hope commands, shoving him away. “You lied to me. You lied to Elle. You didn’t even give her a chance to—“

“What the hell is that?” Brighid asks as the house begins to shake.

Nicky returns to the window. “Uh…if…if I’m seeing this correctly. The icy globe around the house is shrinking.”

“Good,” his father snorts. “Then, we can get the hell out of here.”

“I didn’t say melting,” Nicky says. “I said shrinking…as in getting smaller.”

Hope tries to stand.

“Easy there, sugar,” Grandma Sapphria says, offering a hand. “Your body is weak. You haven’t eaten anything for a while.”

Josiah shifts to lift her.

“Stop it, you lug head!” Hope commands with fury in her eyes.

The room gets cold, cold enough for everyone’s breath to be seen.

“I’m just trying to—“

“Help?” she balks, rising to her feet with Granda Jack’s aid. “Help? All you do is make things worse! You lied and I will never forgive you.”

The air in the house snaps as frost begins to form on the walls.

“Josiah, go outside!” Nova commands.

“Don’t tell me what to do!”

“You’re causing this,” she informs, gesturing to the people around them. Nova increases her body temperature, hoping to mitigate the potential of the room becoming so cold that everyone’s lungs freeze.

“I’m not—“

Brighid grabs Josiah by the collar, and directs him out of the room. There’s a scuffle between the two of them though it doesn’t last long when Nikko aids his brother.
